Ultra High Strength Grout for construction of factory for wind turbines 

THE CHALLENGE

A major new factory was being built on the banks of the River Tees in Middlesbrough, to build monopiles for offshore wind turbines. The large steel cylinders are driven into the sea bed to securely anchor the turbines to the sea floor. Construction of this steel framed building required a high-performance grout with a very high compressive strength to accurately bed the steel frame and support the weight of the structure. Pozament have been helping construction engineers solve challenging problems for over 30 years, with our specialist grouts being used on projects like London’s Crossrail.

THE SOLUTION

In partnership with Bluebay Building Products, Pozament's Ultra High Strength Construction Grout was chosen for this project. It met the performance requirement, delivering a high final compressive strength of over 90N/mm2 along with rapid strength gain. It is shrinkage compensated, enabling a high degree of precision and is chloride free allowing it to be used safely in contact with steel components, bolts and reinforcement bar. Pozament's Ultra High Strength Construction Grout achieves a high early compressive strength of 35 N/mm2 after 1 day and 65 N/mm2 after 7 days making it suitable for challenging build programmes or tasks that need to be completed in narrow working windows.

RESULTS AND BENEFITS

Around 400 tonnes (20,000 20kg bags) of Ultra High Strength Construction Grout was supplied to the site over the course of the project as required by the programme. The high flow characteristics of the grout allowed it to be quickly pumped into place, enabling penetration and levelling with no bleed or shrinkage.
